However, the typical owner keeps their hair in a puppy cut. Groomers see Shih Tzus for this style of haircuts more often than others. The Shih Tzu breed is known for being intelligent and alert, making training easy. They are both friendly and independent, making them also a good choice for someone who works a full-time job. The long, dense coat of the Shih Tzu comes in a variety of colors. Most commonly seen is the gold and white color combination. The Shih Tzu breed originated in both Tibet and China. The closest known cousins of this breed are the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. The most distinguishing characteristic of this breed is the pushed in face. This flat faced breed is more susceptible to heat exhaustion versus other breeds with more elongated snouts. It is recommended that you do not allow your Shih Tzu to spend a lot of time outside on warm days. On days when your dog has been outside, always remember to provide water.
